The International Year Zero (IYZ) serves as a foundational program that offers tailored academic routes leading into a wide range of undergraduate degrees at DMU Dubai, including disciplines such as business, law, social sciences, computing, engineering, and the creative arts. This preparatory course is designed to strengthen students’ academic English, enhance essential study techniques, and build subject-specific knowledge aligned with their future degree pathway. It also introduces students to the teaching methods, feedback styles, and assessment approaches commonly used at DMU, ensuring a smooth transition into university-level studies.
Applicants select their intended undergraduate program when applying for the IYZ, but have the flexibility to switch to another option within the same academic stream if needed.
During the program, students will study English for Academic Purposes (EAP) with the goal of reaching an IELTS equivalent of 6.0 for most degrees, and 6.5 for entry into psychology.

The curriculum is designed to provide a strong academic foundation for those new to a subject area, helping them build essential skills and develop a portfolio that supports progression into their chosen undergraduate degree. For students who already have some background in their intended field of study, the programme enhances and deepens their existing knowledge.
Offering engaging and forward-thinking instruction, the programme includes tailored academic pathways across a range of disciplines. The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) component is aimed at strengthening both language proficiency and subject-specific competencies. A distinctive feature of the programme is its alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 16 – an area where De Montfort University holds global recognition as a designated hub for promoting peace, justice, and strong institutions.
Academic modules are delivered by faculty with subject-matter expertise who also teach at the undergraduate level, ensuring continuity between the foundation year and students’ future degree studies. Programme leaders, who are experienced educators, are actively involved in supporting students throughout their learning journey, addressing questions related to academic content and programme structure.
Students enrolled in this course join a dynamic and diverse community, offering opportunities for cultural exchange and global networking. This four-year academic route, which includes an integrated International Year Zero, is ideal for students with alternative entry qualifications seeking a comprehensive start to their university education.
